Oh dear! It’s been a minute, I know.
For the past three months, I have been silent on LinkedIn, intentionally stepping away from publishing articles and engaging on the platform. Although the break took longer than I anticipated, it was a necessary pause for me to focus on something important, which was “filling my cup.”
Last year, I remember reflecting on the powerful message from Jacinda Ardern’s resignation speech after leading New Zealand through a global pandemic, domestic terror and an economic crisis, to mention a few. Her emphasis on prioritising personal well-being while leading others resonated with me.
“…I believe that leading a country is the most privileged job anyone could ever have, but also one of the more challenging. You cannot and should not do it unless you have a full tank plus a bit in reserve for those unexpected challenges.” -Jacinda Arden.
Ardern’s decision to prioritise her own needs (spending time with family again) and step down as Prime Minister was not just a personal choice but a reminder of how important it is to care for ourselves.
During my hiatus, I dedicated more time to activities that uplifted my spirit and gave me a clearer perspective on what truly matters. For me, it was a period of well-needed replenishment.
Filling one’s cup is not merely about taking a break; it is about ensuring that we have the emotional and mental capacity to contribute meaningfully to others and our work. When we neglect our own needs, we risk running on empty, which diminishes our ability to perform at our best or to support those around us effectively.
If you find yourself feeling burnt out or overwhelmed, remember that it’s okay to take a step back and prioritise your well-being. As Ardern’s example illustrates, recognising when we need to completely let go or just recharge (especially as business leaders) can lead to more sustainable and impactful contributions in the long run.
Sometimes, taking the time to fill your cup can lead to unexpected insights and renewed energy. I’m excited to reconnect and share more with you all.
Until next time, keep your cups full.
